BOONEVILLE — It was a night of big plays and even bigger plays Thursday as Northeast hosted old rival Northwest at Tiger Stadium in Booneville.
So it wasn’t surprising that the Rangers pulled out a 34-28 overtime win on, what else..a big play.
After keeping the Tigers from scoring on the first possession of OT, Northwest went to running back Jacquerious Williams and he delivered with a 25-yard touchdown run up the middle to win it for the Rangers.
Northwest had an opportunity to win in regulation when kicker Tucker Barefoot missed wide left on a chip shot 28 yard field goal. That followed a NW interception return to the 16 two plays earlier.
Williams led the Rangers run game with 114 yards and three touchdowns while Northwest quarterback Michael Heirs completed 31-38 for 343 yards and a TD.
Tiger QB Kevin Hurley completed 10-29 for 173 yards and two touchdowns but the late interception killed Northeast’ chances of winning in regulation. He managed to make the TD-saving tackle after throwing the pick.
Northwest out-gained Northeast 497-254. Former Corinth quarterback DT Sheffield had six catches for 71 yards for the Rangers while former Thrasher running back Shawn Dalton Weatherbee had 23 yards rushing along with a 20-yard touchdown reception for the Tigers.
