BOONEVILLE — The Northeast Mississippi Community College basketball teams swept their only doubleheader of the 2021-22 season against Arkansas State University Mid-South.
The Lady Tigers took down the nationally ranked Lady Greyounds, 88-68, while the Tigers wrapped up the nightcap with a 91-76 victory on Thursday, November 8 inside Bonner Arnold Coliseum.
Calysia Phillips had a career night in the opener. The Coahoma County High School graduate had 31 points on 11 of 21 shooting from the floor with six assists.
It was the most points scored by a Northeast women’s basketball player current Jackson State University star Dayzsha Rogan scored 30 points at Northwest Mississippi Community College on January 14, 2019.
JaQuasia Dorrough added an impressive double-double of 24 points and 17 rebounds. Both were easily career-high figures in her second career start.
No. 9 ASU Mid-South (1-2) placed four in double figures, including a team-best 18 points from Meleanna Williams.
It was Northeast’s first win over a nationally ranked program since taking down Shelton State (Ala.) Community College in December of 2018.
In the nightcap, Northeast broke open a close game down the stretch. Six Tigers landed in double figures, including Josh Mitchell who had a team-best 20 points.
The Tigers had two players that posted double-doubles. Zeke Cook had 12 points and 14 rebounds while Steven Gentry had 13 points and 10 assists during his first start in a Northeast uniform.
Rounding out the list of double-digit scorers for the Tigers is Kylan Blackmon with 19 points, Hobert Grayson with 14 points off the bench and Ken Lewis with 10 points.
UP NEXT: The Lady Tigers begin a two-game road stretch by visiting Mississippi Delta Community College on Thursday (November 11). Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Moorhead.
The Tigers travel to Indiana this weekend for the McDonald’s Classic. First up is a matchup with 3rd-ranked John A. Logan (Ill.) College on Friday (November 12). Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Vincennes, Ind.
