The recent release of the new 2-year high school realignments by the MHSAA has caused quite a stir.
From school’s moving up or down in classification to some region’s inheriting nearly all new teams, some having played in their new region in the past.
Today we’ll focus on football.
As for the Daily Corinthian area school’s none are changing classifications or regions but all have new division mates..some with mostly all new teams.
Such is the case in 4A where Corinth and Tishomingo County are the only school’s remaining in Region 1. Three current members- New Albany, Ripley and North Pontotoc- are staying in 4A but are moving to region 2. The three new 1-4A members are Shannon, Caledonia and Mooreville. The Red Raiders are returning to Region 1 after being moved to Region 2 two years ago.
Shifting to Class 1A, Region 1 will look quite different starting next fall. With Myrtle and Baldwyn moving up top 2A, and Coldwater moving to Region 2, Biggersville and Thrasher will see several new faces on the field. The new 1-1A lineup features, the aforementioned Lions and Rebels along with returnees Ashland, Falkner and Byers, and newcomers Okolona, TCPS and Smithville.
The Chieftains, Eagles and Seminoles are former Region 1 members making their return.
Region 1-3A will have a new look as well. Current members Alcorn Central, Booneville and Kossuth remain with Amory and Nettleton moving to Region 4. The new members of 1-3A are Mantachie and Water Valley. The Mustangs are moving up from 2A while the Blue Devils are moving over from Region 2.
Region 1-2A will be almost completely realigned. The three current members holding over are Walnut, East Union and Potts Camp. New members include Baldwyn (who moves up from 1A), Belmont (who drops down from 3A) and Myrtle. Strayhorn is moving to Region 3-2A while Mantachie moved up to 3A.
Other Northeast Mississippi Schools of note switching classifications or regions include Houston moving from 3A to 4A, Nanih Waiya going from 1A to 2A and Tupelo moving from Region 1 to Region 2 where the Golden Wave will be matched against teams like Starkville, Clinton, Oxford and Grenada.
Next time we’ll focus on basketball. Here’s a subtle hint for hoops fans in hill country. Wait until you see the lineup of girls teams in Region 1-2A. It’ll blow your mind.
The new 2-year reclassifications can be found on the MHSAA website home page.
