SELMER, Tenn. — The first Cade Suggs Memorial Soccer Match for all former McNairy Central soccer players is set for this Saturday.
The match, featuring both men and women, will pit the old-timers against each other and will be played at 6 p.m. at the Selmer Middle School Field.
Coach Nick Cook decided it would be fun and more competitive for the alumni to play each other instead of trying to chase the ’21 Bobcats team.
Cade graduated in the spring of 2018 before he died in August 2018.
Following the alumni game, there will be a special ceremony to retire his jersey number. Suggs is the first Bobcat soccer player to earn the prestigious honor.
His jersey will be awarded to his parents, Jeff and Mitzi Suggs, at the end of the ceremony.
Sadly, Cade was the first player that Coach Cook ever lost and said he thinks of his former player on a daily basis.
“Cade came into his senior season and was showing how passionate he was about soccer,” said Cook. “He worked as hard as any player I have ever coached in getting ready for the season.”
The coach added, “He had such a good sense of humor. I would notice quite often how he would have his teammates just cackling.”
Cook praised Suggs for how hard he competed, from the first kick to the end of the match.
Former players wishing to play should message Coach Cook on Facebook. There will be no admission and donations will go for scholarships.
