KOSSUTH — A Kossuth freshman is making headlines in the high school baseball world.
Hank Eaton, a pitcher and shortstop for the Aggies, was recently recognized as the No. 1 freshman in Mississippi by two separate ranking companies and is already receiving attention from college scouts as he prepares for what he and his KHS teammates and coaches hope is a successful 2021 season on the diamond.
Eaton has been recognized as the top Mississippi freshman, regardless of position, for the Class of 2024 entering the 2021 season by both PBR (Prep Baseball Report) and Perfect Game (PG).
“I am extremely thankful to receive these rankings from such elite organizations,” said Eaton. “With all the talented players across our state as well as the country it takes continuous effort to compete. God has blessed me with the ability to play the game I love at an elite level as well as putting various people in my path to help push me to be better.”
One of those individuals is Kossuth head baseball coach Daniel Threadgill who will be the beneficiary of having one of the top players in the country on his roster.
“He is such a tremendous athlete being both a pitcher and a shortstop for us,” Threadgill said. “His talents are obvious to those who have seen him play and I’m especially proud to have him as a part of our team for the next four years.”
“And he’s a very good student and person off the field as well,” he continued.
The PBR summary of Eaton reads like this: “Hank Eaton, IF/RHP, Kossuth HS, MS – Eaton’s athleticism makes him very versatile and though the Junior Future Games participant can play several positions, it looks like he will settle in on the left side of the infield. He shows very good footwork and a strong, accurate arm. At the plate, he displays tons of gap-to-gap power but can also leave the yard. He uses a balanced approach with a lengthy stride, getting great extension at contact. He has plenty of upside on the mound as well, with a fastball up to 86 with good run. He pitches with a smooth, controlled delivery and high leg kick. The arm is loose through a 3/4 slot and he commands his secondary stuff. The slider shows a late swing-and-miss sweep.”
Perfect Game posted the following on their site: “Hank Eaton is a 2024 SS/RHP, 2B, 3B, IF, OF with a 6-1, 178-pound frame from Corinth, Mississippi who attends Kossuth High School. Medium and athletic frame with room to fill out and time to do so. Ran a 7.29 second 60-yard dash. Is primarily a shortstop showing athleticism in his movements, soft hands and can throw from multiple arm angles with carry in his throws. Secondarily a right-handed pitcher with a controlled delivery starting with a high leg lift, loose arm action up to a 3/4 arm slot and a fastball up to 86 miles per hour. His fastball shows life with a frequent sidearm and a slider with late sweeping ability. He has legitimate two-way upside being a right-handed hitter with open stance with a hand set by his back left shoulder. Low leg trigger and stays on plane and gets inside the baseball with a fluid stroke and a long finish. Great student. Named to 2020 Gulf Coast Prospect Showcase Top Prospect list.”
Rankings are handled in various ways by each organization and with Perfect Game the rating system begins with “possessing the potential for a very high draft pick and/or elite college level prospect.”
Eaton’s current rankings are as follows: with PBR he is listed as the No. 151 player overall, No. 34 at his position overall, and No. 1 in his class inside the Magnolia State.
Division 1-3A will most definitely have a keen eye on Kossuth’s Hank Eaton for the next four years as he continues to improve and show why he is currently ranked the top baseball player in the Class of 2024 in Mississippi.
