After having to take most of the week off recovering from an illness at home, I am certainly thankful to be back at work.

Join me now as we take a brief look at ‘What’s Going On Around Here’ this week.

COVID limits holiday hoops schedule

This time of year, with the school kids enjoying their Christmas break, there are normally several area teams taking part in Christmas and New Years tournaments around the area as well as around the region.

A couple of schools will be participating in ‘holiday hoops’ including the 4-1 Corinth boys. The Warriors, who swept Division 1-4A foes Ripley and New Albany this week to assume early control of the region race, will face off against Briarcrest Christian out of Memphis in the Holly Springs Holiday Classic Saturday morning.

“They had a cancellation and called me to ask if we would fill in so we are,” said CHS head coach Keith Greene. “It’s good for us to get some more game time in.”

Alcorn Central has a pair of regular season games set for Saturday at Amory while Corinth will visit Biggersville next Tuesday before local hoops teams take the rest of the week off.

The tournament scene will reconvene on Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 28-29 as Alcorn Central host the Annual Peggy Bain Christmas Tournament. Check the local schedule for the complete lineup of games and times. Those same two days the Walnut girls will play in the Pontotoc Christmas Classic while Northeast will host a boys only one-day event at Bonner Arnold Coliseum featuring four games which will include teams from Tupelo, New Site and Houston to name a few. According to Northeast Sports Information Director Blake Long there will be two afternoon games, followed by the gym being cleared for sanitation and safety followed by a pair of evening games.

The Annual Alcorn County Tournament is set for Jan. 7-9 at Alcorn Central High School where, according to AC Athletic Director Trae Bain, the tournament will have a different twist this year with games being played in both gyms and non-traditional seeding of teams. More details will follow soon so keep an eye out in the Daily Corinthian sports pages as well as my twitter page.

All-Area Teams revealed next week

The highly-anticipated Daily Corinthian All Area Football Team is set to be published next weekend.

Already I’ve fielded numerous phone calls, text messages and emails inquiring who will be on the first team. Goodness knows I’d spill the beans if I could but it would be unethical. I can tell you this much: choosing an overall Player Of The Year was agonizing and could have gone to any of three finalists.

There will be an addition to the Player of The Year category as well so keep an eye out for that.

Til next time, Merry Christmas and happy holidays.
