Alcorn Central football has a new head coach.

Marty Warren, who served as defensive coordinator at Bruce High School from 2020-2021, officially started his new job on Thursday as begins a new era in Golden Bear gridiron country.

“My last head coaching job was 10 years ago,” he said. “I wasn’t sure I wanted to do it again. But I just turned 52 and i thought it was the time to do it. I have some good buddies there, in Iuka, in Corinth.”

“I thought I would come and see what happens,” said Warren.

Before coaching at Bruce, Warren served as linebackers coach and strength and conditioning coordinator at Pontotoc. The Warriors improved from 6-5, 2-3 in his first season to back-to-back third round playoff appearances in 2018 and 2019.

The Golden Bears finished 4-6 last season, their best finish since 2008.

“I’m not a miracle worker by any means,” Warren said. “I have no special magic to turn a program around. But my strength is strength and conditioning.”

Warren has typically run the Wing-T on offense.

“I believe in preparation,” he said. “I am not one of the great chess players on game day. I believe in running the ball and keeping the opposing offense off the field and not giving them as many opportunities to score.”

Defensively, Alcorn Central will run a 3-4.

Warren said he hopes to improve numbers on the roster as ACHS plays in a tough 3A division with rivals Kossuth and Booneville and a competitive non-division schedule.

“Maybe we can get some more kids out,” he said. “We want more than 11, 12, 13 kids. We probably won’t be a two-platoon football team. If we can get them excited about playing Golden Bears football, that’s half the battle.”
