In a pitcher’s duel on Monday night, the Kossuth Lady Aggies came out on top against a quality Class 5A opponent in Saltillo with a 1-0 road victory.
Kossuth’s Maddie Mask out dueled Saltillo’s A.K. Willingham as the two combined for 23 strikeouts. Mask tossed a one-hitter, walking just one as well, and striking out 12 on the night.
The lone run of the game came in the top of the first inning on an RBI single from Annabelle Marlar. Hadley James had drawn a walk leading off the game, and Mask sacrificed her over. Victoria Fields reached on catcher’s interference to push her to third base.
Fields hit a triple in the third inning as well. In addition to her and Marlar, James, Mask and Caliann Mitchell also had hits.
Willingham for Saltillo allowed five hits and walked two while striking out 11.
Baseball Alcorn Central 14, Wheeler 1
The Golden Bears picked up the win in six innings with big fourth and sixth innings.
Hunter Koehlinger picked up the win with four innings of two-hit ball. He struck out six and walked just two on the night. Koehlinger also hit a double. Jackson Miller got it done on the mound and at the plate with two scoreless innings in relief, striking out five and allowing no hits or walks. At the plate, he drove in four runs on a pair of hits, including a double.
Andrew Williams was 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, while Landon Powers had two hits and a pair of RBIs. Alex Gee had the fourth double of the game as the Bears improved to 4-1 on the season.
Heritage Academy 13, Kossuth 12
The Aggies took their first loss of the season in a high scoring game on Monday night. Heritage scored nine runs in the fourth and tacked on a pair in the fifth and sixth innings. Reid Coward led the way for Kossuth with a two-hit night, while Hank Eaton and Ashton Knight hit doubles and Bryson Jackson and Hunter Hutchens each had a triple. Rylan Henry drove in three runs, while Coward, Knight and Eli Hinton had a pair of RBIs each.
Eaton struck out three in the start, while Hinton had five strikeouts in relief.
Starkville Academy 5, Corinth 4
The Warriors fell on the road as Starkville Academy walked it off in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Madden Butler made the start for Corinth and struck out nine in five-plus innings. At the plate, Ben Austin had a pair of hits, including a double.
