With a big week in post-holiday tournaments, Kossuth senior Anna Greene and Booneville sophomore Kedrick Simmons have earned Daily Corinthian Player of the Week honors for the week of December 26-30.
Both players led their teams to 3-0 records on the week.
Greene and the Lady Aggies picked up a pair of wins against Southaven and Northpoint Christian at the Peggy Bain Memorial Tournament on Wednesday and Thursday, then dominated Pine Grove with a huge shooting performance on Friday at the Booneville Christmas Classic.
Greene sank six three-pointers and finished with 19 points on Friday against Pine Grove. She was also the Lady Aggies’ leading scorer in the win over Northpoint Christian, scoring 17 points. On Wednesday against Southaven, it was her free throw that gave Kossuth the one-point win.
“It’s just great to have Anna back healthy, and we’re excited about the week ahead,” Kossuth girls’ coach Rick Hodum said.
Kossuth opened division play on the road at Mantachie on Tuesday night before hosting this weekend’s Alcorn County Tournament.
The Blue Devils too picked up a trio of wins, handing Nettleton just its second loss of the season on Tuesday at the Gerald Snider Classic and giving Biggersville its first loss in the last game of the Booneville Christmas Classic on Friday night. Booneville also won over Houston in their Booneville Christmas Classic.
Simmons battled an injury early in the week but came back with a dominating game on Friday night against Biggersville in a battle of defending state champions. Simmons poured in 27 points to lead all scorers, including a couple of slam dunks.
“Kedrick had an incredible game against Biggersville,” Booneville coach Michael Smith said. “Biggersville is an elite defensive team, and (Dylan) Rowsey is one of the best defenders to come through this area in a long time. It was a testament to Kedrick and being able to score in a variety of ways to do so well against their defensive system.”
He scored nine points in a win over Houston on Thursday and also had nine points despite leaving the game with an injury early in the third quarter on Tuesday against Nettleton.
Booneville hosted Southaven on Tuesday and will compete in the Prentiss County Tournament this weekend, starting with the semifinals on Friday. Both Booneville teams got a first-round bye in the tournament.
