Corinth is in the familiar position of being on the edge of an icy event Tuesday night into Wednesday morning in what will be a wet and gray winter week.
While much of the Mid-South is under an Ice Storm Warning, the incoming storm prompted a Winter Weather Advisory for Alcorn, Tippah, McNairy and Hardin counties from midnight tonight to noon Wednesday for freezing rain with ice accumulation of two-tenths of an inch possible. The Wednesday morning commute could be affected.
“As for impacts across the warning and advisory areas, ice covered roads and bridges will make travel difficult to impossible and very dangerous,” said the National Weather Service Memphis Forecast Office. “We urge you to stay home. If travel is unavoidable, we urge you to please use extreme caution.”
Motorists heading west from the Corinth area will encounter deteriorating conditions. Tree damage and power outages are considered likely in the Ice Storm Warning area, which could see a half inch of ice.
“For areas in north Mississippi that aren’t in an advisory, we expect precipitation to stay all rain as temperatures will remain above freezing,” NWS said. “Rain could be heavy at times. Ponding on roadways and low lying areas is possible. For Wednesday, we expect precipitation to slowly transition from ice to rain as the temperatures rise Wednesday. Rain should continue through Friday morning before we finally start to dry out.”
Areas to the west also faced the possibility of icing Monday night.
A low temperature of about 31 is expected during tonight’s rain, while the temperature will remain above freezing during more rain Wednesday night and Thursday.
The weekend will bring some relief from the gray skies with sunshine and temperatures climbing into the 50s on Saturday and Sunday.
