With two statewide tax-free weekends approaching, one local organization is doing its part to encourage shopping local.

The Alliance, Alcorn County’s economic development arm, is launching a Shop Local initiative from Mississippi’s Sales Tax Holiday for back-to-school July 30-31 until the tax-free weekend for Second Amendment- related sales Aug. 27-29.

People who spend $25 or more at The Alliance member businesses during the month-long period between the two tax-free holiday weekends will be entered in a weekly drawing to win one of two $100 gift cards to a member business of the winner’s choice.

“We want to encourage everyone to shop locally first for all of their back-to-school materials and hunting supplies over the two upcoming tax-free weekends,” said The Alliance Community Development Director Lane Williams Yoder. “When we all shop locally, more of our tax dollars stay here to support and invest in our community.”

To be entered in the drawing a person would need to email receipts to alliance@corinthalliance.com proving $25 or more was spent at a member business during the contest time period.

There is no limit to the number of entries. “The more you shop, the more chances you have to win,” said Yoder.

Drawings start Monday, Aug. 9 and conclude Monday, Aug. 30.

“When we all shop locally, we are supporting our neighbors, our friends and our fellow community members,” she added.

During the traditional back-to-school sales tax holiday, Mississippi shoppers can purchase certain items without having to pay the 7 percent state sales tax. Items include clothing, shoes, school supplies, backpacks, uniforms and more. The holiday takes place between 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 30 and midnight Saturday, July 31.

The Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday is a three-day period where the state’s 7 percent sales tax is not collected on the sale of firearms, ammunition, or certain hunting supplies. The holiday takes place between 12:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 27 and midnight on Sunday, Aug. 29.
