A report of a shooting in the county followed by a report of a car fire in the city led to the discovery of a deceased male subject around midday Wednesday.
The Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department has a person of interest in custody in connection with the death.
Sheriff Ben Caldwell said the chain of events began with a call of a shooting on County Road 192, which is off Mississippi Highway 2 east of Corinth. But law enforcement officers did not find any shooting victim in the Road 192 area, he said.
While that investigation continued, the Corinth Police Department responded to a call of a vehicle fire on Main Street near Buchanan Street. Responding officers found a deceased male in the vehicle.
“A person of interest was taken into custody leaving the scene of the vehicle fire,” said Caldwell. “We believe it is related to the County Road 192 call.”
The car had heavy damage to the passenger compartment, he said.
The person inside the vehicle has not yet been positively identified.
