Warm May Saturdays will offer a couple of special excursions at Shiloh National Military Park.

Two ranger-led hikes, “Fraley Field: the Bloody Battle Begins,” will take place this Saturday and on May 21. Follow Ranger Timothy Arnold and retrace the steps of Colonel Everett Peabody’s early morning patrol as they run into the Confederate skirmishers of the 3rd Mississippi Battalion. Participants will learn about the approach routes of both the Union patrol and the Confederate skirmishers as they meet in Fraley Field and the opening shots of the battle.

Then follow the path of Prentiss’ Division as they engage in a fighting withdrawal back to Peabody’s camps.

The hike will take place from 10 a.m. to noon on both Saturdays, and hikers will meet at the park Visitor Center before driving out to the starting point of the hike. The distance of the hike is about 3.5 miles over moderate terrain. Participants should wear clothing and footwear appropriate for the weather. Insect repellent, sunscreen and water is recommended.

Pre-registration is required to participate in the hike.

Call (731) 689-5696 to register. For more on Shiloh events, visit www.nps.gov/shil, facebook.com/shilohnmp or @ShilohNPS on Twitter.
