The much-anticipated official opening of Proper Street happened on Thursday following a final inspection. The last few days included striping of the newly rebuilt section of Proper Street from Cruise Street to Young Street and Cruise Street between Cass and Douglas.
“We got all the cleanup done and new signage and striping,” said Public Works Director Clayton Mills. “The barricades are gone and it is officially open to traffic. It is a hundred percent better than what we started with.”
The bumpy ride on the heavily traveled east-west route had become a top citizen complaint. The city took on a new bond issue in order to tackle the project, which included extensive rebuilding of the street due to problems with the street base.
The project began last June, and weather delays pushed it past the original December completion date.
Extensive work on Gaines Road and Norman Road is also part of the bond issue, and that project is set to begin possibly within a few weeks. The work will include base repairs where needed and resurfacing on Gaines from Highway 2 to Norman Road and on Norman Road from Gaines to South Harper Road.
Phillips Construction was awarded the contract for the $1.76 million job.
