THEO — The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal Friday afternoon highway crash involving a vehicle and a person riding a bicycle about 10 miles west of Corinth on U.S. 72.

Alcorn County Coroner Jay Jones responded to the tragic scene about 2 p.m. Friday near Settlemires Used Parts in the Union Center/Theo community.

Jones identified the victim as 39-year-old Josh Mercer of CR 743, who lived not far from where the accident happened. The driver of the westbound vehicle which struck the cyclist told authorities the victim was attempting to cross the highway.

Multiple emergency and law enforcement agencies responded, including the Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department, Union Center/Theo Volunteer Fire Department and MHP, who will be filing the report after the investigation is complete.

Air Evac was at first dispatched, but canceled shortly after the 911 call went out about the accident between a vehicle and bicycle.

It was the second straight day for tragedy to hit Alcorn County as a local man died Thursday in a workplace accident.
