Officials are investigating an inmate death at the Alcorn County Jail.

Sheriff Ben Caldwell said the inmate was discovered during a regular cell check at about 5:20 a.m. Thursday. The inmate was identified as Brandon J. Spence, 39, of Corinth.

Caldwell said jail workers found Spence unconscious with a blanket tied to his bed and around his neck. Employees immediately entered the cell and removed the blanket from the inmate, who was taken to Magnolia Regional Health Center, where he was pronounced deceased.

As a matter of routine procedure in such cases, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate the death.

The sheriff said Spence was being held at the county jail for charges of possession of methamphetamine and two counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was also being held for the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
