Joy Bateman loves expressing herself through her paintings, dining at great restaurants in the South and experimenting with wonderful new recipes in her home kitchen.

She combines all three of life’s passions – plus another as a publisher – in releasing nine books since 2005 in her Art of Dining series.

Bateman’s latest book in the successful series – “Art of Dining Memphis 4” – was released just over a week ago and the author visited Corinth on Thursday to experience downtown and sign copies of her books at Ginger’s.

“This place is wonderful,” said the author about Ginger’s as she signed not only Memphis 4, but her very first book based in her hometown of Memphis and other Art of Dining adventures on New Orleans, Nashville, Knoxville and Amelia Island.

The books showcase the artist’s original paintings and highlight recipes from some of the south’s leading and popular restaurants. Memphis 4 alone highlights 44 restaurants.

Bateman plans to visit smaller towns near Memphis to share and promote her books and Corinth was not only the first stop, but a good fit, she said.

“This is a great place to be,” said the author, thumbing through the latest Memphis book, the fourth based on the Bluff City, while making note of great restaurants and tasteful recipes of dishes served in the dining experience.

Her books are a good fit in hometown gift shops like Ginger’s, said the author.

While the COVID-19 pandemic this past year has taken its toll on restaurants, her books have been a welcomed bright spot in 2020.

“Stay at home and cook the recipes,” she said from behind her book signing table near Ginger’s front entrance, complete with Art of Dining aprons. “Restaurants have always been happy to share their recipes.”

Bateman has been an account executive for over 35 years, with many of those years of service for Memphis magazine and the Memphis Business Journal, winning numerous awards along the way.

“I have been selling advertising for a long time,” she said, smiling. “It’s been a rewarding career.”

She now works for Delta magazine and begins her second year in January.

Painting, selling, cooking, dining and writing – the author, cook and artist said she would not have lived life any other way.
