A Wheeler man has officially been charged in the beating death of an elderly resident and assault on another resident which was stopped when he was shot by a concerned citizens.

Prentiss County Sheriff Randy Tolar said Jackie Brandon Neblett, 37, of Wheeler, has been charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder.

Deputies were dispatched Tuesday evening, June 2, after the elderly victim was found beaten in his shop. The suspect could not be located that evening, but the next morning a resident contacted dispatchers to report he had spotted and was following the suspect.

The citizen witnessed the suspect enter a residence and begin assaulting a female. The citizen entered the residence and shot the suspect twice, stopping the assault and saving the victim’s life, according to the sheriff.

Neblett’s name had not been released pending formal charges after he was released from the hospital following treatment for the gunshot wound.
