Booneville’s incoming Ward 1 alderman will get an early start on the board.
Aldermen voted unanimously Tuesday to appoint Tara Green Lauderdale to fill the unexpired term of Ward 1 Alderman Jason Michael which continues through the end of June.
Michael, who served two terms on the board, resigned May 1 after he moved to a new home outside of the ward. He was not seeking reelection this year.
Lauderdale won the Republican primary for Ward 1 Alderman in April and, with no opposition in next month’s general election, was already scheduled to take office when new terms begin at the start of July.
In other business on Tuesday, the board:
approved seeking bids for an emergency sewer repair to replace a failing line on Fourth Street. City Engineer David Moore explained the line is too deep and the dirt in the area too unstable for the city’s sewer department to repair it safely without also risking damage to a major water line in the area so they must seek bids from a contractor with the right equipment to safely perform the work.
approved seeking bids for the emergency replacement of a sewer lift station on Pinehill Drive which is currently failing and requiring almost daily repairs to keep operational.
approved hiring Derrick Hindo as a full-time firefighter.
approved annual industrial tax exemptions for ProVia and Marathon Cheese Corporation.
congratulated the Booneville High School Lady Blue Devils softball team for their recent state championship win, the first state championship in the program’s history. The board also wished good luck to the Booneville High School baseball team which will be competing this weekend for the North Half title and a spot in the state championship series.
