Severe weather struck the Crossroads area for the second Saturday in a row, bringing heavy winds and torrential rain and causing severe damage in some areas.

A strong system of severe thunderstorms began moving through the area just before 2 p.m. Saturday, dumping huge amounts of rain on the region.

Local emergency officials said the sheer volume of water was the primary problem in Corinth and Alcorn County.

Official rainfall totals were not immediately available, but Corinth Street Commissioner Jim Bynum said he estimated as much as three to four inches may have fallen in the city in a very brief period of time. That much water in a short amount of time is guaranteed to create problems.

Significant flood was reported along Shiloh Road, Madison Street and Oak Lane.

Alcorn County Emergency Services Coordinator Ricky Gibens said flooding was also the major issue in the county with water over the roadways in several areas. He said he had not received any reports of significant damage to structures late Saturday afternoon.

The most significant damage in the area appeared to come in Ripley and southern Tippah County downed trees and power lines and damaged roofs. No injuries were reported late Saturday.

Bynum said with forecasters calling for additional heavy rain today he urges motorists to stay off the roads if flash flooding does occur again. He said people may be tempted to go out sightseeing and speed through areas of flooded roadways, but even if a vehicle is able to make it across the wave created by its passage can cause additional damage to nearby structures.

There really hasn't been anything on the news on TV about Ripley. I know that ACE has been there since Saturday afternoon helping to repair power lines.
