LOSS — Men’s Clothing and Luggage Taken in Bold Break-in Sunday Night
Thieves entered the Reid Brothers clothing Store sometime Sunday night January 17, and took clothing and merchandise valued at several thousand dollars. The break-in was discovered about 4 a.m. Sunday by the Iuka night marshal, Alton Coker.
The burglars had forced the front door open and then gone to the basement where they broke the lock on the door leading into the alleyway at the back of the store. They are thought to have loaded the stolen goods on a truck or car backed into the alley, using the basement door as an exit. Inventory soon after the burglary showed 75 to 100 men’s dress suits of various sizes and colors missing. Also taken were 30 overcoats, 10 sport coats, 12 suede jackets, 2 horsehide leather jackets (1 black and 1 tan) and 3 pieces of saddle tan Samsonite luggage. All the clothing articles bore Reid Bros. identifying label in addition to the brand names of the various makers.
No description of the thieves or getaway car was obtained. It is thought the burglary occurred sometime between midnight and the time it was discovered. Most of the clothing items had been taken from the lower racks, allowing the thieves to work without detection. Sheriff Clarence Pace is investigating.
