The Corinth High School Alumni Association is asking for use of the city-owned former museum building at Fourth and Washington as its meeting place.

“What we’re looking for is a home,” said Tom Rogers, speaking on behalf of the organization before the Board of Aldermen on Tuesday. “We, right now, could not purchase a building, but we could maintain a building.”

He described some of the young organization’s contributions to the community thus far, including the awarding of scholarships totaling $9,000 to a dozen students and teacher grants. The group has also honored distinguished alumni and teachers.

The former museum building also once housed the YMCA.

“It’s close to a lot of our hearts,” said Rogers. “A lot of us grew up in it.”

The association wants to use the building for meetings, to house its memorabilia and for reunion activities.

Ward 5 Alderman David Roberts expressed support for the proposal, and others on the board appeared open to the idea.

“They are aware there are a lot of files in there and it would be a year or so before we move them,” said Roberts.

The city has used the building for storage, and the files it now houses would move to the new justice center and jail facility on South Harper upon its opening.

The alumni group formed in late 2007.

No action was taken on the request.

In other business, the board accepted Buddy Ayers Construction’s bid of $339,031 for an upgrade to Cardinal Drive in the industrial area, including widening part of the road. It is a Community Development Block Grant-funded project.

Other bids were Ronald Franks Construction of Savannah, Tenn., $371,137.53; APAC of Glen, $389,735.73; Prairie Construction of Tupelo, $421,656.47; Rutlege Contractors of Tupelo, $437,409.70; Ausbern Construction of Okolona, $453,066; and Claunch Construction of Puryear, Tenn., $534,036.24.
