One person is dead following a head-on collision between an Alcorn School District bus and a car west of Corinth Thursday afternoon.

Coroner Jay Jones identified the fatality as Victoria Isabell Longoria, 16, of County Road 750. She was a Kossuth High School junior. She was the only occupant of the car, a Chevrolet Cobalt. No students were on the school bus.

Funeral services for Longoria are set for 3 p.m. Sunday at Holly Baptist Church with burial at Holly Baptist Church Cemetery.

Alcorn Superintendent Larry B. Mitchell, who came to the scene, said Joey Spencer, the driver of Kossuth bus #138, had just completed his route when the crash happened around 4 p.m and was headed back to the school.

The crash happened on County Road 750 in the Tuscumbia Canal area about 5 miles west of Corinth. The vehicles went off opposite sides of the road, with the car’s front end submerged in standing water in an area with thick foliage. The bus traveled a short distance off the road in a dry area and collided with a stand of trees.

Spencer was not significantly injured.

Sheriff Ben Caldwell said it was not yet clear what led to the collision.

Both drivers were taken to Magnolia Regional Health Center.

Deputy Tony Davis investigated the wreck scene.
