With 27 years under her teaching belt, Katriena Burgess recently said her final goodbye to the Alcorn School District.

The Alcorn Central High School educator is one of 13 teacher and administration retirees in the county school district this year. All together the group has served the children for more than 334 years.

“It’s bittersweet,” Burgess told the Daily Corinthian. “I’ve been teaching so long, I’m definitely going to miss it.”

An alumni of Alcorn Central, she spent 21 years teaching early childhood and career exploration courses at the high school. She also worked along side her educator father, Jerry Grisham, for many years.

“There was a timeframe where my dad and I taught next door to each other. And another time when me, my dad and my mom all worked at Alcorn Central,” she added. “Now my daughter is about to begin teaching kindergarten at the (Alcorn Central) elementary school. There will end up being three generations of my family who have taught at Central.”

All 13 retirees were honored at a recent ASD Board of Education meeting.

“I really appreciate the dedication and service this group has contributed to the Alcorn School District,” said Superintendent Larry B. Mitchell. “Thier commitment to the children of this district will be recognized for years to come.”

Along with Burgess, other ASD retirees include Sherri Bain, 29 years; Pam Burcham, 23 years; Van Carpenter, 41 years; Stephanie Clausel, 30 years; Diane Daughtry, 29 years; Charlette Foster, 30 years; Patricia Jones, 24 years; Nancy Lamber, 25 years; Joyce Miles, 26 years; H.L. Richie, 15.5 years; Pat Sawyer, 26 years; and Lillie Weaver, 10 years.

Alcorn School District Advisory Council members provided refreshments at the meeting and also presented each retiree with a special engraved nameplate.

“We wanted to do something to simply say ‘thank you’ to each retiree,” said Jodi Fiveash, council chairperson. “To be committed to the district and the children for some many years is truly an wonderful accomplishment.”
