Seersucker and bowties, sundresses and hats will be the look of the day on the grounds of the Verandah-Curlee House for this year’s derby party.

It’s set for 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, as a viewing party for the Kentucky Derby. The event returned last year for the first time since 2007 as a fundraiser in support of the historic home.

“We had a great turnout and made over $7,000,” said organizer Nancy Palmer. “The weather was beautiful, and the flowers were great. We hope everybody will break out their derby attire again this year.”

The derby partiers will enjoy appetizers and drinks such as mint juleps and view the 143rd race at Churchill Downs on a large screen.

The sharply dressed will have a chance to pick up prizes in a hat contest recognizing the most creative, most beautiful and largest headwear. Palmer said the friendly competition for the best-dressed is expanding this year to include a “most dapper dude” category for the guys.

Derby attire is encouraged but not required.

It is one of three events the Friends of the Verandah Curlee House has on the calendar this year in support of the home. The annual home and garden event is set for May 19-20, and the Christmas open house is Dec. 1-2. The top three membership levels in the Friends of the Siege and Battle of Corinth includes tickets to all three events.

Tickets may be purchased online at facebook.com/verandahcurleehouse/shop or contact the tourism office at 287-8300.
