DNA results from the Mississippi Crime Lab have identified the skeletal remains found in a wooded area on County Road 510 early this year as Ellen Teressa Coughlin.

Sheriff Ben Caldwell said she was a white female, 39 years old, and was reported missing by a family member on Oct. 16, 2016. The last known contact with her was in August 2016.

The death is being investigated as a homicide.

"The investigation is ongoing," said Caldwell. "No charges have been filed at this time."

A person of interest has been interviewed.

The sheriff said Coughlin is originally from Illinois but had been living in the area.

It appears the death likely occurred in August or September, Caldwell said.

On Jan. 4, a dog brought partial human remains to a residence in the Kossuth area. After extensive searching, the sheriff’s department discovered additional remains a little more than a week later.

The sheriff asks for anyone who may have information about the disappearance or death of Coughlin to contact the sheriff’s office at 286-5521.
