The spoils went to the victors.

And the runners-up.

First-year Kossuth head coach Trave Hopkins was named Class 3A Coach of the Year in the annual Mississippi Association of Coaches All-State Team.

Drake Nightengale, whose Sumrall team lost to Kossuth in the title game for the second straight season, was named Player of the Year.

Sixteen players and one coach earned recognition on the first team. Kossuth sophomore Jacob Wilcher joined two other Sumrall players on the first team.

Senior pitcher/catcher Tyler Mercer was a member of the second team.

Kossuth finished the 2014 season at 23-11, winning 10 of 11 games in the postseason including a second straight sweep of perennial contender Sumrall.

The Aggies rallied late in the season to earn the No. 3 seed in Division 1-3A and earn a shot at following up on the school’s first baseball title.

Wilcher batted .473 with 12 doubles, eight homers and 32 RBI this past season. He also stole 20 bases while being named the Player of the Year on the annual Daily Journal All-Area team.
