One of the most important parts of the Alcorn County Relay For Life was a wash out when the event was originally held in late May.

Local event chair Lori Moore recently announced a new date for the luminaria ceremony. The event is set for Friday, July 25 at 8 p.m., at the soccer field in Crossroads Regional Park.

“We were able to get the survivor walk and survivor dinner completed in May before the rain came,” said Moore. “The radar didn’t show any clearing, so we decided to cancel the entire event just before the luminaria event was set to begin.”

The luminaria ceremony occurs at every Relay For Life event. As the sun sets, luminaria light up the night. Relay For Life participants, survivors and caregivers gather to remember loved ones lost to cancer and to honor those whose fight continues.

“Sky lanterns can be purchased up until the night of the event from any team member or myself,” added Moore. “These lanterns can be purchased in memory or in honor of someone.”

Moore said the Relay Raffle will also be wrapped up during the event.

“Items were donated by each team to help raise money,” she said. “Chances are $1 each and the items will be drawn for on July 25.”

Teams and sponsors will also be recognized at the event.

According to Moore, other than rain the May event was a success.

“We far exceeded our donation goals and funds raised by the teams,” Moore said. “We had about 15 teams turn out even despite the weather.”
