Aggies, Warriors sweep in opening round

KOSSUTH -- O’Bannon got a moral victory in the fifth.

The defending Class 3A champions completed an short opening round sweep of Division 3 runner-up O’Bannon with a 10-0 win in six innings on Friday.

Kossuth (14-10) was given the victory in Game One after lightening halted the contest in Greenville with the Aggies leading -- and still batting -- 19-0 in the top of the second.

The Aggies, who have now won six straight postseason contests and 10 of 11 the past two seasons, will face Division 4 champion Louisville in the second round. That series is set for Thursday-Saturday, with the Wildcats hosting Game 1 and Game 3, if necessary.

• In Class 4A action, Corinth completed its opening-round sweep with a 13-4 win at Gentry. The Warriors (13-10) will face Division 2 champion Lafayette County in the second round.

Pierce Langley got the win in complete-game fashion. Corinth got eight hits, paced by Quade Reaves 2-for-3 showing.

• All told Kossuth, which got into the playoffs by beating league champion North Pontotoc on the final game of the regular season, scored 29 runs while making just 20 puts.

The Greenwave’s moral victory came when sophomore Jacob Wilcher was finally retired with one out in the fifth. His previous five official at-bats -- he was hit by pitch in his second plate appearance on Friday -- were all homers.

The Ole Miss commit hit three home run on Thursday -- including two in the first inning -- then drilled a pair of two-run shots in Friday’s series clincher.

Cole Tomlin and Hunter Swindle combined on a one-hit shutout, with Tomlin getting the victory. The two faced just five over the minimum in six innings, with the other baserunners coming from three hit batsmen and a walk.

Tomlin went the first four, losing the no-hit bid with two outs in the fourth. Swindle finished the contest and struck out the side in his first inning of work.

Kossuth led 3-0 after one. Wilcher’s fourth homer of the series provided the first two digits and Matthew Woodruff added another with a one-out double.

After neither team scored in the second, Kossuth doubled its lead with a three-run third. Connar Boyer had a two-out single, then scored on Tomlin’s knock after swiping second.

After being hit in his second at-bat, Wilcher made in 8-0 with a two-run blast in the fourth.

Two O’Bannon errors sandwiched around a Nick Wilcher single made it 9-0 with no outs in the sixth. Swindle put one in left field to end the contest via run rule.

Kossuth finished with 11 hits and got six other baserunners on via five hit by pitch and a walk. Six O’Bannon errors produced six more baserunners for the No. 3 team from Division 1-3A.
