Alcorn Central kept up its record-setting season when it counted the most.

In the first of three steps to the Class 3A State Meet, Lady Bears and Bears swept the Division 1-3A Meet, which wrapped up Wednesday at Tishomingo County High School.

All told, the two clubs -- now a combined 59-1 -- qualified 47 entries and will be represented in 31 of 34 total events -- at Saturday’s Region Meet at Charleston High School.

• The Central boys won their sixth meet of the season en route to posting a 30-0 mark. After placing second a year ago, the Golden Bears provided a program first by winning the Division Meet.

“They’ve had very solid wins all season since the first meet at Potts Camp when they squeezed past Holly Springs in the last event,” said Head Coach Bobby Purvis.

The Bears qualified in 14 of the 17 events, doubling up in eight, for a total of 22 entries -- all school marks for a pre-Regional. AC set another program standard by winning 12 out of 17 events.

Samuel Holley (800, 1600) and Brandon Turner (both hurdles) led the way among the individual champions. Central garnered three other firsts by sweeping the relay events.

Other division champions included: Issac Byrom (pole vault), Trevor Godwin (high jump), Ben McIntyre (long jump), Joe Harbor (400) and Trey White (discus).

• The Lady Bears also made qualifying history while defending their Division Meet title for the first time.

The Central girls will send a record 25 entries after qualifying in all 17 events for the first time. They also doubled up in eight events while earning their fifth meet title and posting a 29-1 mark.

“This is the first time in the last two meets that we’ve had a complete girls team and they made the most of it,” said Purvis.

Central earned nine first-place finishes, with Mallory Wigginton pulling off the hat trick by claiming the high jump as well as both hurdle events.

Lauren Walker (triple jump), Taylor Derrick (pole vault), Kolby Mynatt (discus), Ashlee Manahan (1600) and Alissa Ann Williams (400) also added first-place ribbons.
