KOSSUTH -- Kossuth got the win, but more importantly, by the right margin.

Kossuth broke a tie with a two-run sixth and kept Mooreville off the board in the seventh to claim a 5-3 win in late Division 1-3A action on Thursday.

Mooreville (22-3, 6-1) took a 1-0 win in the contest played in Lee County on April 3. If Kossuth (10-11, 5-1) wins their final two league contests the Lady Aggies would win the title and No. 1 seed in the league for the upcoming playoffs.

“That’s the first time we’ve beaten Mooreville in fast pitch in at least eight years,” said KHS Head Coach Steve Lyles. “We had a long dry spell.”

Carleigh Mills (5-4) won the pitcher’s duel with Mooreville’s Haley Donald, who dropped to 11-2. Kossuth managed just three hits, while Mooreville mustered only five -- two via Donald.

Kossuth scored two runs in its initial at-bat, without the benefit of a hit. A walk, throwing error on a sacrifice bunt, and a ground out staked KHS to an early 2-0 lead.

Madison Switcher’s two-out double in the second made it 2-0. And in foresight of things to come, that hit and Kossuth’s final two of the night followed sac bunts.

Mooreville broke the shutout bid with a single run in the fourth. Two more in the sixth knotted the game at 3-3.

Kossuth broke the tie and got the needed insurance run in its turn in the sixth. Mills helped her own cause with an RBI-double that scored Briana Bryan, who was hit by a pitch to start the inning.

After pinch-hitter Abie Trim bunted courtesy runner Mason Drewery to third, Kristen Devers supplied a big two-out knock.

Mooreville got a lead-off single to start the seventh, but was caught stealing on the ensuing pitch. Mills struck out the next batter, then ended the contest with a grounder to third.

The junior struck out five batters, giving her 90 punch outs to just four walks, one intentional.

“That’s pretty remarkable,” said Lyles.

Kossuth travels to Alcorn Central on Monday, before completing the league’s double round-robin at Belmont on Tuesday.
