Corinth won the special teams battle, but couldn’t do enough offensively to hold off Lafayette County in the Warriors’ home opener on Friday.

The Warriors (1-1) got nine points directly from special teams -- eight courtesy Brice Spence -- and turned a fumbled punt into three more digits, but the Commodores claimed a 28-12 win in their first visit to Warrior Stadium II.

Corinth totaled just 80 yards of offense -- 40 in each half -- on 55 plays. The Warriors netted just 63 yards on the ground on 46 carries, with 19 resulting in no gain or negative yardage.

Lafayette (1-1) overcame three turnovers and a safety in the opening half to take a 14-12 lead at intermission. The ‘Dores scored on two of their three drives in the third quarter while holding Corinth to minus-3 yards on 15 plays during the same 12-minute span.

Spence tackled Rashun Rockette in the end zone following a muffed punt return, staking Corinth to a 2-0 lead at the 7:49 mark.

The ‘Dores but together back-to-back scoring drives in the second quarter to go up 14-2. The first was an 88-yard march in nine plays that saw LC convert on third-and-8 and second-and-17 before Devin Thomas threw the first of two touchdown passes.

Spence got Corinth quickly back in the game with a 93-yard kickoff return following D.K. Buford’s 3-yard run with 6:54 left in the half. The return was the longest by a Corinth player in the 20-year, 117-game history of Warrior Stadium II.

Corinth missed a golden opportunity to retake the lead before the end of the first half. Demarkus Prather dislodged the ball from Rockette on a punt return and Kyoshi Agnew came away with the pigskin at the LC 16.

Antares Gwyn scrambled for a first down to the LC 5 on third-and-seven, but Corinth lost a yard on the next three plays. John Michael McFall drilled a 24-yard field goal to pull Corinth to within 14-12 with 1:05 left until the break.

Buford, who had 150 yards and three scores from scrimmage on 21 touches, hauled in a 60-yard pass and carried three Warriors into the endzone on the next possession as LC extended its lead to 28-12 with back-to-back scoring drives in the third.

Corinth ran 33 plays in the second half but could muster only 40 yards. The Warriors drove past midfield on half of their six second-half possessions, but saw those drives end twice on downs and once via fumble.

Lafayette totaled 17 first downs and 320 yards on 51 plays. The ‘Dores carried 42 times for 181 yards and got 139 through the air on 5-9 passing.

The ‘Dores turned the ball over three times -- none in the second half.

Corinth totaled eight first downs, just two in the initial half. The Warriors were just 1-of-9 through the air for 17 yards with an interception among their three turnovers.

Corinth travels to Lewisburg (0-1) on Friday in the first meeting between the two programs.
