ICC will play nine Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) matches. The Lady Indians will open the season at home against Delta State University on August 26 while the Indians will open the season on August 28 when they host Meridian Community College in the season’s first doubleheader.
“We are excited about the upcoming season,” said Sullivan. “We’ve got two very eager and we think talented squads coming in and we are looking forward to a big year and hopefully some big things.”
The Lady Indians finished second in the North Division and lost in the semifinals of the 2012 MACJC State Tournament in double overtime, 1-0, to state runner-up Jones County Junior College. Sophomores Amber Carruth (Amory), Sarah Hern (Columbus) and Olivia Heine (Madison) have been elected team captains for the upcoming season.
“Our signing class was great and returning players looking good,” Sullivan said. “We are hoping from more big things out of them. We think we have a chance to make some noise which is big because this year the women’s North Division champion gets to host the state tournament.”
The Indians finished last season 6-6-4 and were two points out of first place with two games left in regular season play. Returning All-State Goalkeeper Cullen Grantham (Corinth) and Daniel Cox (Olive Branch) have been selected as team captains.
“A lot of coaches wouldn’t be too excited about a big crop of freshman coming in, but on paper we’ve got a super-talented team coming in and I couldn’t be more excited,” commented Sullivan. “I think we’ve got some of the best players in the northern half [of the state] coming in to play with a couple of sophomores coming back to make a good mix of players to hopefully make a lot of noise with the guys as well.”
Both squads will report on August 4 for preseason training and the mandatory National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) acclimation period.
