County Squads Drop Two in Tournament

BELMONT -- Alcorn County teams went 1 for 3 during a one-day tournament hosted by the Belmont Cardinals.

The Belmont Challenge featured seven games with twelve Mississippi female teams and the neighboring Tigers of Red Bay, Ala who participated in two games during the day, and left with two additions to the win column.

Alcorn Central 50, Falkner 40

Kicking off action for Alcorn County, the Lady Bears provided the only win with a 50-40 defeat of the Falkner Eagles.

Falkner's Brianna Williams led both teams with 33 points, including 4 shots from the arch, as Lauren McCreless led Central with 13.

The Bears orchestrated a come back in the second half, down by 4 points to open the third quarter.

Led by McCreless, Central outscored Falkner 29-14 in the second half.

Haley Barnes, who earned 8 points in the game, gained the winning edge for the Bears with eleven rebounds.

Four of Barnes' boards game in the final period, all on offensive plays.

Red Bay 46, Kossuth 44

Up against the Alabama 2A defending champions, the Lady Aggies fell two points short of a comeback in their 46-44 loss.

With a 16 point deficit at half-time, the Aggies defense went to work in the third quarter holding the Tigers to only 3 points while putting up eleven of their own.

In the final period, the Aggies cut the Tigers' lead to three points on two occasions - including the final minute of play.

A foul on Red Bay's Lexy Lindsey extended the lead for the Tigers to four as she drained two at the line.

A last minute shot by Rachel Winters, released as time expired, would add three points for the Aggies to leave the game at one point.

Red Bay's Lexy Lindsey led both teams with 14 points, followed by Rachel Winters of Kossuth with 13.

Marlee Sue Bradley and the Tigers Carlee Berry each totaled with 9.

Belmont 80, Corinth 37

The Cardinals struck first with a two-pointer and never looked back, defeating the Corinth Warriors 80-37 in the closing game of the tournament.

The Warriors would remain below the 30 point mark until the fourth quarter, where they tied with the Cardinals at 11 each.

Aspen Strickland led both teams with 16 points, followed by Belmont's Kela Powell and Elisiah Jones at 15.

Hannah South and Natasha Jones both earned double digits for the Lady Cardinals.
