Alcorn County Supervisors focused on spending matters during their
mid month meeting on Monday as they continued to hear funding requests
for the new fiscal year.
The board voted unanimously to approve Magnolia Regional Health Centers
request to purchase the imaging center property on Proper Street.
Board attorney Robert Krohn told supervisors he had received a letter
from the hospital seeking permission for the purchase at a price of
$740,000.
Krohn explained the purchase has been approved by the hospitals
board and will not cost the county any money, but all land sales or
purchases by the city-county-owned hospital must be approved by the
county board of supervisors and the Corinth Board of Alderman.
Board members also agreed Tuesday to pay a $2,000 bill from Woods
Recycling for damage to the companys equipment at the county
rubbish disposal site.
Second District Supervisor Jeff Patterson explained the company provides
recycling services for wood products at the rubbish landfill.
Their equipment was damaged by several large pieces of metal that
were mixed in with a load of wood debris that had been dropped at
the site. Supervisors agreed it was the countys responsibility
to pay for the damage, noting the problem was caused because an unknown
person dumped a load of waste at the facility that was not properly
separated. A new pair of trucks were also purchased Tuesday to be
used for hauling household waste from the county transfer station
to Prairie Landfill in Houston. Supervisors approved the purchase
of two Mac trucks at a cost of $94,425 each from Tupelo Truck Center
under a contract that guarantees the company will be willing to buy
the trucks back for $55,000 each at the end of two years if the county
wishes to sell them. The dealership also agreed to buy the two trucks
being replaced for a total of $16,000.
County Purchase Clerk Paul Rhodes presented the board with figures
outlining the maintenance expenses being incurred by the county for
the current vehicles. Board members agreed the new trucks would cost
less than maintaining the existing trucks being used to haul the trash.
Board members also expressed support Tuesday for a plan to honor Vietnam
veterans in conjunction with veterans day activities later in the
year. Bobby McDaniel and William Bill Huff said they are
developing a plan for a specific day honoring veterans of the Vietnam
War.
Huff said he recalls the negativity many Vietnam veterans were greeted
with when they returned home and they want to have a day to give them
the honor and recognition they didnt receive at the time. Plans
are also underway to bring the Vietnam Memorial traveling wall to
Corinth in conjunction with the annual Veterans Day parade which Huff
organizes.
Supervisors said as soon as a date for the observance is agreed upon
they will do anything needed to assist with the effort.
The board also received three more budget requests for the upcoming
fiscal 2010 budget currently being prepared:
The Allliance requested 2 mills for support of its programs.
This is the same as it received in the current budget.
Region IV Mental Health/Mental Retardation Commission requested
support of $51,111 for the new fiscal year, the same amount received
under the current budget.
The Crossroads Museum requested $11,000 for the 2009-2010 fiscal
year, an increase of $1,000 over the current budget.
