The Alcorn County Board of Supervisors became the second local
government to put its stamp of approval on a final agreement uniting
Tishomingo, Alcorn and Prentiss counties for economic development.
Supervisors voted unanimously Thursday to approve the agreement creating
the TAP Alliance. The regional partnership will join the counties
and the municipalities of Corinth, Booneville and Iuka in efforts
to foster job creation in the region. The Corinth Board of Aldermen
approved the agreement last week.
Gary Chandler, president of The Alliance, said he expects the agreement
to be approved by the remaining municipalities by the end of the month
and is excited to see the organization taking shape.
"This creates the structural base of the organization,"
he said.
The group will be governed by a nine member board of directors made
up of two supervisors from each county and the mayor of the largest
municipality in each. Each government is expected to provide $5,000
for the first year of operation.
In response to a question from Alcorn County supervisors, Chandler
said the agreement does not allow the TAP Alliance board to obligate
any member government to spend funds. Any spending on TAP Alliance
projects would still have to be approved by the member municipalities.
Supervisors said they believe the partnership will better position
the region to obtain grant funding and federal funding for economic
development projects and improve the ability of the member municipalities
to create better opportunities for residents.
"I think we will be stronger working together," said Third
District Supervisor Jeff Rencher.
