Physician penalized privileges

Corinth physician Dr. Neil Sloan has avoided a full hearing and has accepted settlement terms set by the Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure on his prescription writing privileges.

The settlement will set specific restrictions on the doctor's ability to write prescriptions for narcotic pain medication. The board order naming the exact nature of these restrictions is expected to be released soon, according to an official at the Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure.

Sloan is one of two Mississippi doctors who were summoned for a hearing regarding charges that include unethically prescribing potentially addiction forming, or addiction sustaining medication, without the medical documentation required by the Board's official rules and regulations.

With agreement to the consent order, Sloan -- along with Dr. Stanley Russell of Brandon -- avoided suspension and have reportedly also agreed to monitoring and oversight along with the restrictions.

In the interest of teaching the public how to make educated choices in health care providers, board officials also gave some additional, helpful information.

By visiting the board's website at www.msbml.state.ms.us, lots of information can be accessed -- including helpful advice on how individuals can verify any Mississippi physician's license and the date it was issued, the physician's primary practice location and/or otain a copy of any public record(s) on file for that physician. All that is needed to have access to these public records is a written request and a $25 payment.

There is also a link to a five-page form where a patient can detail information about a complaint against a Mississippi physician. There is also some explanations as to what the board can and cannot do -- including handling anything to do with billing issues, for example.

For more detailed instructions, visit the website at www.msbml.state.ms.us, or call the Mississippi State Board of Licensure at (610) 987-3079.
