School district approves new principals

The administrative shuffle in the Alcorn School District continues as the board of directors approved a few more new hires, including a couple of assistant principals, on Tuesday.

Hires approved Tuesday include:

- Nellie Massengill as Alcorn Central Middle School assistant principal

- Tammy Johnson as administrator assistant at Alcorn Central Elementary

- Tazel Choate as Alcorn Central High School counselor

- Christy Welch as case manager, Special Education Department

- Brian Phelps as site coordinator for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program

- The board approved the rehiring of Carrie Mitchell as a Biggersville Elementary teacher using 2010 Title I Distinguished School award funds of $31,000. The extra funding was awarded based on performance.

- Jolene Whittemore Burress as data manager for the mentoring grant

Some key personnel changes previously approved include Tim Littlejohn taking the reins as principal at Alcorn Central High School. He was previously the assistant principal. Lisa Wigginton was named assistant principal.

Tonya Farris was previously named principal at Alcorn Central Elementary, replacing Joe Horton, who becomes principal at Kossuth Elementary. Sherlyn Haley will head Kossuth Middle School, and Charla Essary will be assistant principal at KMS. Richard Turner will be vocational director.

Gina Smith continues as Biggersville Elementary School principal.

Most of the key staff hires for the coming school year have now been made, according to Superintendent Stacy Suggs.

Prior to the meeting, principals were called in for an informational session with Attorney James Price regarding procedures for hiring as set forth by Mississippi statutes. He said the superintendent’s recommendations for principals must be based solely on qualifications, and the same is true for principals in their hiring of instructors.

Any rejection by the school board members must be based on a “good reason to the contrary” — knowledge of some reason that the recommended person would not make a good employee.

Price said the process is designed to eliminate politics and favoritism from the hiring procedure.

In other business Tuesday:

• The board tabled until the next meeting action on a proposed middle school athletic participation policy. Under the policy, sixth-graders would not participate on middle school teams unless there are not enough seventh-graders available to field a team. Also, eighth-graders would be eligible for high school teams at the discretion of the coach.

• The board tabled action on a request for Billy Pruett to move into the district’s house located on the Glen campus.

• The board approved the purchase of an AIM 2.0 rapid alert and call notification system at a cost of $10,750.
