BIGGERSVILLE — A collision between a car and a school bus near the Biggersville school campus sent a dozen students and one adult to the hospital Tuesday afternoon.

The Alcorn School District school bus, driven by 39-year-old Shawn Mathis of Saltillo, was returning to Biggersville from the district science fair in Booneville around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday when it attempted to cross the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 45 entering the school campus and pulled into the path of a southbound 2001 Saturn driven by Phylles Rhodes, 53, of Mantachie, said Mississippi Highway Patrol Trooper Ray Hall, public affairs officer for MHP Troop F.

Twelve of the approximately 26 third through sixth grade students on the bus were transported by ambulance and private vehicles to Magnolia Regional Health Center with reports of neck and back injuries. Two teachers were also on the

Rhodes was also transported by ambulance to MRHC.

Hall said none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.

Mathis was not injured in the crash.

An accident reconstruction team from the highway patrol was on the scene shortly after the crash occurred and the accident remains under investigation.
