The Aggies rolled up 430 yards of offense over the first three quarters in ending a three-game slide that dated back to last season’s playoff loss. The Royals, who had eight of its 12 drives end in punts and three more via Kossuth takeaways, fell to 1-2.
Kossuth (1-2) scored the first four times it had the ball, taking a 10-0 lead after one period and 36-0 at recess. The Aggies, who finished with 438 yards on 51 plays, sandwiched a pair of back-to-back TD drives around its lone turnover in the second quarter.
Blaine Mitchell, who had 81 yards and two scores on 12 carries, found the endzone from 9 yards out to cap a 5-play, 82-yard initial drive. Jacob Meeks, who was 5-for-8 in the extra point department and recorded six touchbacks on 10 kickoffs, drilled a 40-yard field goal on Kossuth’s next possession.
Kossuth amassed 175 of its 247 first-half yards in reaching the endzone four times over five second-quarter drives. Mitchell hit paydirt again, this time from 29 yards out, before Weston Bobo called his own number from just outside the goal line. Bobo closed the half hitting Matthew Steward for two more six-pointers.
Bobo, who accounted for 184 yards and three scores on 17 plays, bulled is way in from the 1 to make it 29-0. KHS needed to cover just seven yards on the drive after a Stewart recovered a New Site fumble.
The two juniors would help Kossuth score twice more -- making it six scoring drives in seven first-half possessions -- over a span of three plays and 1:40 off the game clock to push the lead to 36-0 at the customary stoppage of play.
One play after an interception by Zaen Harbin, Bobo hit Stewart for a 52-yard score. New Site went three and out, and two plays later the Bobo-to-Stewart connection produced another TD -- this one covering 40 yards with 53 seconds left in the half.
Stewart finished with three scores and 111 yards from scrimmage -- 100 and two TDs on three catches -- on just five touches.
Blake Cain and Stewart made it 50-0 after three quarters with scoring runs of 57 and 1, respectively, on Kossuth’s first two possessions of the second half.
Reed Mitchell, who led all rushers with 93 yards on just three carries and had 106 yards from scrimmage on three touches, scored from 1 yard out on the first play of the final quarter. Two plays earlier, the sophomore ran out of gas and was caught from behind one yard shy of a producing a 95-yard scoring run.
Kossuth was able to add only eight yards to its offensive output in the final period, with massive substitutions and a running clock limiting the Aggies to just two drives and seven yards on seven snaps -- including two kneel downs.
New Site reached the Kossuth 38 -- its deepest penetration of the night -- on its last possession, but Tyler Mercer preserved the shutout with an interception just outside of the endzone with 2:35 remaining in the contest.
New Site totaled just 119 yards -- only 40 in the second half -- on 51 plays. The Royals passed for minus-2 yards, completing twice as many (2-1) passes to Kossuth.
Kossuth registered nine tackles for loss with (unofficially) Austin Crum and Nathan Rhodes in on two stops each.
Bobo was 7-of-13 through the air for 155 yards and two scores, and added 29 yards and a TD on four totes.
