The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating a school bus wreck in Northeast Mississippi which apparently killed the bus driver and seriously injured at least three school children.

The Benton County school bus left U.S. 72 just west of the Hamilton Crossroads and overturned on its side beside the highway.

Officials at the scene said driver Chester Cole did not survive the crash and three school children were airlifted from the scene to Memphis hospitals. It wasn't clear if the driver died as a result of injuries in the crash or some other cause.

The accident happened about 7 a.m. when the driver was just beginning his morning route, so there were few school children on the bus, said officials at the scene.

The rural Benton County area is about 10 miles west of Walnut.

Multiple emergency and law enforcement agencies responded to the scene, which blocked traffic along busy U.S. 72.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The Daily Corinthian will share more information on the tragedy as the MHP continues its investigation and releases official details on the crash.
