Thirty teams compete in local chili cook-off

It was a warm Memorial Day weekend in terms of temperature in the Crossroads area.

Add some spice and things got even hotter in downtown Corinth.

Hundreds of people gathered at the Corinth Depot and Crossroads Museum on Saturday for unlimited samples of homemade chili.

Thirty teams competed in the 12th annual Crossroads Chili Cook-off. People from across the United States participated in the event. Some came as far as Nebraska and Texas. Others came from Tennessee and Georgia. There were two teams from Corinth.

Dr. William Senf was one of the local cooks. He has been cooking chili for nearly nine years.

"It's definitely a hobby. I used to be a judge for the cook-off, but I liked it so much I decided to start cooking myself," said Senf, a urologist.

Senf's favorite part of the event is when people come up and sample his chili.

"I enjoy it. It's fun and you meet people from everywhere," said Senf, a resident of Corinth.

Senf was honored this year by placing second in the green chili category.

A Texas couple who has been competing in chili cook-offs since 2013 entered the Corinth event. Chuck and Betty McCroy traveled 600 miles to be a part of the cooking challenge.

"We are trying to get qualified for the World Championship and in order to get there we have to win a competition in each category," said Chuck McCrory, a native of Crowley, Texas.

The world championship will be held in Des Moines, Iowa this year and brings in crowds of people.

There were different categories of chili, such as red, veggie, green and homestyle. People paid $5 to walk around and sample unlimited amounts of chili. The Green Market was set up beside the event so people could enjoy the vendors as well.

All the proceeds raised from the cook-off benefit the Crossroads Museum.

A second day of competition was held on Sunday, but was closed to the public.
