Alcorn deputies capture escaped DeSoto County trusty

Alcorn County law enforcement captured an escaped DeSoto County inmate Thursday morning, ending a search that began on Wednesday.

Robert Gene Heath, 42, who was serving a short sentence for a misdemeanor shoplifting offense, was a trusty serving on a work detail at the DeSoto County School District when he drove away in a school district truck.

He was captured off of County Road 405 south of Corinth about 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

Local officials got word that he was in the area Wednesday afternoon.

"We located the vehicle on County Road 418 just off the road," said Sheriff Ben Caldwell. "Witnesses there stated that he ran off into the woods just shortly before we arrived. We did call out a K9 and they searched the area, but we weren't able to find him."

It is a thickly wooded area with little road access. The search went into the night, and the sheriff's department checked out a couple of leads that did not pan out.

Because Heath has family in Alcorn County, law enforcement believed it likely that he would remain in the area.

"We've dealt with him in the past and don't believe he's violent," Caldwell said shortly before the capture.
