Big hair, Daisy Dukes, jeans with holes and clothing that doesn't match is coming back in style to the Crossroads area.

Corinth High School is taking the city back to the 1980s with its annual spring musical this week.

This year's theme is "Rock of Ages High School Edition." The high schoolers have been practicing since the beginning of the year.

"They have been preparing for this. They practiced three weeks in February and two weeks in March," said Kelly Treadway, the drama teacher for the high school.

Treadway said she was inspired to pursue the theme after going to see Rock of Ages in Southaven. She was so encouraged by the production and the high energy that she thought it would be perfect for her students.

"It's a story about people going after big dreams and doing what it takes to achieve them. That's exactly what I want my students to do," said Treadway, who has been busy getting the set ready.

According to Treadway, the musical will feature lots of dancing, singing, and acting and very artistically talented students. "They have been working very hard on this," said Treadway, who also teaches English along with theatre.

Treadway isn't the only one who is super pumped about the musical. Some of her students are too.

"I'm really excited, but I am very comfortable too," said Xander Watkins, a junior at CHS. "I grew up playing the guitar and my character is a rockstar," he said.

Treadway said her favorite part is the diversity of the cast. "Some are in band. Others are writers and some are even athletes. They are all from different cliques, but the minute they walk on stage they become one big family," she said.

There are 55 cast members and nine adult crew members on set. Treadway believes there is more collaboration on this show than the previous ones she directed. She wants people to know that if they come out to see the musical, they will be impressed.

"There will be strobe lighting and many songs from the 80s will be performed. The audience can even sing along with the cast," said Treadway, who is ready for the show to debut its talent.

Watkins, who is playing the role of Stacee Jaxx, thinks the crowd will be in for a treat. "The 80s was a fun time. If you had some hair and a dream, you could be anyone you wanted to be," he said.

The musical will kick off at 7 p.m. on Thursday and Saturday at the CHS auditorium. It will begin at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

(People who are interested in attending the Rock of Ages High School Edition can purchase advance tickets at the CHS office for $7. Tickets are also available at the door.)
