Escaped inmate back in custody

Hancock

A Booneville inmate is back in custody after escaping from a work detail in Tishomingo County where he was being held.

Stephen Edward Hancock was captured around 7 p.m. Friday in Colbert County, Ala. after running into the woods while picking up trash on a road crew along Tishomingo County Road 958 earlier in the day.

Tishomingo County Sheriff John Daugherty was seen by corrections officers running into the nearby woods, prompting a lock down of the other inmates on the work detail and a search that included the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the Mississippi Department of Transportation and the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

Hancock was being held in the Tishomingo County Jail for the City of Booneville where he was charged with misdemeanor domestic violence. The sheriff said he has agreed to be extradited and will be brought back to the Tishomingo County Jail where he will face charges related to the escape.

Daugherty expressed his appreciation for all those involved in the search and recapture of the inmate.

"In situations like this, it is essential that law enforcement agencies work together and it shows that id does when a situation like this occurs," said the sheriff.
