Awesome Aggies: Kossuth claims state championship

JACKSON — The Kossuth Lady Aggies rallied from a 13-point fourth quarter deficit to make history as they fought their way back for a 48-44 victory over Belmont in the MHSAA girls 3A state championship game at the Mississippi Coliseum.

The win was historic in more ways than one.

The title is the first in school history for Kossuth. It is also the first girls state championship in Alcorn county history. Each county school has recorded appearances in past championship contests with no gold balls to show for it.

But the Lady Aggies changed all that in one dramatic comeback of a win..

"This team just has the 'it' factor..we have a little of everything," said head coach Angie Malone as she held the championship trophy close. "We came here in '93 and got beat but this time we knew we had a real chance to win."

I'm just so proud of the way my girls responded after falling behind in the third quarter."

Kossuth concludes the most successful season in school history with a 25-7 record. Belmont finished at 25-9.
