Grandmother, two kids are victims in house fire

A mobile home fire Monday afternoon in Alcorn County injured at least one.

Three family members are dead following a mobile home fire in rural Alcorn County.

A 46-year-old grandmother and her two- and five-year-old grandchildren were killed in the blaze which happened around 11:40 a.m. on Monday at 72 County Road 540 near Mitchell Hill Road in the Biggersville and Rienzi area.

Officials said both children were removed from the fire by volunteer firefighters and were taken by ambulance to Magnolia Regional Health Center. While Air Evac was being prepared to fly the children to a Memphis trauma center, both succumbed to their injuries. The grandmother was pulled from the home and pronounced dead on the scene.

Another adult female escaped the fire with injuries and was transported to MRHC.

Alcorn County Coroner Jay Jones identified the victims as Samantha Mason, along with her grandchildren, Dakota Brassfield and Crystlyn Brewer. All bodies have been sent for autopsies.

Southwest Volunteer Fire Department was among the emergency workers who responded to the scene. Units remained on site throughout the day to control hot spots.

Mississippi State Fire Marshall Rusty Mccoy arrived in Alcorn County mid afternoon on Monday to begin the investigation into the cause of the fire.
