An educator with a long history in the region's community colleges in roles from instruction to administration is joining the Corinth School District Board of Trustees.

The Board of Mayor and Aldermen appointed Rilla Jones, dean of Health Science Instruction at Itawamba Community College, to the seat being vacated by Becky Null. The new five-year term begins March 1.

"I'm very honored and excited to be joining the school board," said Jones. "My children graduated from Corinth. I'm a huge, vocal supporter of the Corinth School District."

Jones has been a Corinth resident since 1983, and both of her children, Andy and Katie, were born in Corinth and attended K through 12 in the city.

She is in her third year at ICC after 30 years at Northeast Mississippi Community College.

"I think my experience in the community college system will be a benefit because dual credit is such an exciting opportunity to allow students to take college courses while they are still in high school," said Jones.

She previously served as vice president of instruction at Northeast, where she also filled several other roles through the years.

Alderman Michael McFall nominated Jones for the school board post.

"I know Rilla is enthusiastic and ready to serve," he said. "She has had a long career in education and is highly respected among her peers. She will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table from day one. Serving as a dean in college, she knows firsthand what the students need to move into a college or technical program and to be prepared to enter the workforce."

Becky Null is wrapping up a term on the school board.

"The past five years serving as one of your appointees for the Corinth School District Board of Trustees has been one of the most gratifying volunteer opportunities for me in this community," Null wrote to the board. "I do believe that it is time for me to step aside and allow another person to fulfill this position which expires at the end of February."

McFall said the board appreciates her service.

"She was an excellent board member during her term. I had lots of parents express that to me over the last several years," he said.

The latest session of the Board of Aldermen also included the appointment of Nick Dodd to a seat on the board of the Corinth Housing Authority, replacing Willie Mae Sargent, who no longer lives in the city.
