Drug charge nets man 20 years behind bars

A local man was sentenced in Alcorn County Circuit Court to serve 20 years on a drug charge.

Anthony Scott Merryman, 29, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of possession of methamphetamine in a quantity between 10 and 30 grams with intent to distribute. The judge handed down a 30-year sentence with 10 years suspended, leaving 20 years to serve in custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections, according to court records.

The sentence is concurrent with another previously imposed sentence out of Tishomingo County.

Other sentences handed down on guilty pleas during the current term of court include:

• Zack Dewayne Eaton, grand larceny -- Suspended 10-year sentence and five years of probation, along with payment of restitution of $3,800. He also received a suspended seven-year sentence on one count of burglary of a building and a suspended five-year sentence on one count of malicious mischief.

• James Ray Hood, possession of amphetamine -- Three years in the house arrest program in lieu of an eight-year sentence in MDOC custody

• Jordan Neil Talley, two counts of possession of methamphetamine -- Suspended three-year sentences and three years of probation

• Corey Lee McGaha, burglary of a vehicle -- Suspended seven-year sentence and five years of probation

• Sebastian Rafael King, two counts of possession of a weapon by a felon -- Three years to serve followed by four years of probation on count one and a suspended 10-year sentence in count two

• Byron Lamar Alexander, sale of cocaine -- Three years in the house arrest program in lieu of 20 years in MDOC custody. The sentence includes five years of probation. On a second indictment for sale of cocaine, he received a suspended 20-year sentence.

• James Ervin McGee Jr., two indictments for shoplifting -- Suspended five-year sentences and five years of probation. He was ordered to pay restitution with co-defendants totaling $3,421 to Walmart.

• Billy A. Moment, possession of a weapon by a felon -- Suspended 10-year sentence and five years of probation

• Megan Veronica Ashe, introduction of methamphetamine into a correctional facility -- Suspended seven-year sentence and five years of probation

• Gregory Lynn Williams, two counts of uttering a forgery -- Sentencing deferred until Oct. 18
