Downtown radio tower gets OK

By Jebb Johnston

A radio station gained approval from the Corinth Preservation Commission to locate a radio tower on Foote Street as the business plans to move downtown.

The commission approved the request for a tower not to exceed 50 feet for WXRZ. The location is the space formerly occupied by Kates & Co.

The tower is not expected to be highly visible, extending above the building by about 15 feet. Two small dishes will be on the tower, and another dish will be on the back corner of the building, said Steve Knight, the station's general manager.

The radio station has been on South Johns Street for the past 15 years. Other regulatory reviews are pending for the radio station's move.

In other requests, the commission tabled an application for storefront modifications at 502 Cruise Street, where Brandy Clark plans to operate a hair salon. The commission wants to have some discussion with Clark about the plans.

The hair salon is set to occupy the middle third of the building in space that was formerly home to the Corinth Academy of Cosmetology.

Commission Chairman Bob Moore said the proposal is to dress up the metal storefront by attaching wood finishings to the building and painting it, as well as adding a window box.

Because there are neighboring open spaces in the same building, commission members feel it may be better to paint the existing storefront to avoid a "patchwork" appearance.
